News | Girls Primary Schools Event

On 24th September, Guildfordians once again welcomed primary school aged girls from across Guildford to Stoke Park for an introduction to rugby. This was aimed at Girls in school years 4-6 in the hope they'll join our newly formed Girls Pathway within Guildfordians.

This time, we had representation from 8 of the local primary schools including: Burpham, Holy Trinity, Northmead, Send, Queen Eleanor's, Boxgrove, St. Thomas' and for the first time, St. Joseph's.
There were more than 50 girls attending all of whom got to experience most facets of the game. Starting with a joint warm up, based around the sorts of animal movements you might see on a rugby pitch, the girls then moved into skills rotations. These included passing, evasion, attacking principles, defence sets and also an introduction to tackling. We finished off the day with some match play. The most important factor was mixing all the schools up into the groups, thus encouraging the girls to meet new people and reducing the inter-school cliques and rivalries that often occur.

All the girls seemed to enjoy it, as did the teachers!

All in all, we're very hopeful of uncovering some future gems for our newly formed Girls Pathway designed to allow a girls only training and match play provision within Guildfordians for girls in the U9's and upwards.

Great thanks go to Jason Hillier, Graham Sampson, Graham Sedge for helping lead the coaching and Sarah Persin for keeping us all mostly to time. Plus, we had amazing support from our existing girls section including: Samia, Tasha H (U16s Girls), Holly M, Amelie F, Bobbie F and Betty E (U14s Girls) for their brilliant mentoring and engagement. It was very clear these girls were the proper role models for the primary school girls and quite right too!
