Written : Saturday 29th Mar 25Friday 21st March and the u11s were invited to send one team to a unique festival, played under the lights at OCs in Esher.
A small gathering as a tester event saw just two games played but playing 13min halves to test the fitness. Drawn against strong looking opposition from Esher and Teddington, the kids rose to the occasion.
Spotting quickly that both teams were relying on the classic “big lad up the middle” tactic, Guildfordians kept a narrow defence, committing two players to most tackles. Quick into the ruck on both sides of the ball, forcing turnovers they controlled the ball for long periods.
In a victory for technique and teamwork over brute force, the smaller Guildfordians players dominated play, walking away with 2 victories, scoring 22 tries and conceding just 2!
Passing out wide was order of the day allowing the speedsters to stretch their legs, with Lochie, Will S, Oscar, Andrew, Max and Teddy all making significant metres.
In defence Charlie got in the head of one notable big lad, hitting him time and again, sending the message that there was no way through! Andrew and Lochie combined for a massive hit (not a dump tackle, honest!) which put their man in touch and triggered a round of wide grins and high fives.
Oscar, Max and Lucas controlled the middle of the park leaving the oppo confused as to whether they would run or pass, a task made easier by some superb support running from all.
Carys hit the rucks the way only she can bring numerous turnovers. Herbie, Seb, Magnus and James all using their size punching holes and shoving oppo out the way in contact despite having less playing time this year was a highlight too.
And a final thought for Teddy B who played beautifully in his adopted role at Full Back. Plucking high kicks out the air over his shoulder, running hard in return and some try saving tackles…all from someone who had never played rugby just a few short months ago.
This was proper rugby played by kids who’ve worked hard to implement what they’ve been taught and who clearly relished the Friday Night Lights experience. Congrats to you all!
