7 days ago.At the top of the table by only 1 point going into the 3rd game of the Quins Cup, Guildfordians knew this fixture would be their toughest yet and it proved to be with a win for Chobham at Stoke Park on Sunday.
The visitors started strongly up the slope and early pressure pinned a sleepy Guildfordians in their half for the 1st quarter resulting in 2 converted tries. Running freely out of their 22 despite dogged tackling efforts from Alex C & Ruben K in the midfield, Chobham had the strength of a big pack and were dominant in the backs. Waking up towards the end of the 1st half, Guildfordians sneaked a penalty that was slotted by Charlie W and the half ended 14-3 to the visitors.
Guildfordians started the 2nd half with more purpose, particularly from Devon S & Nic W, and a loose pass from Chobham sent Simon Y over in the top right-hand corner. The conversion from Cameron H took the score to 14-10. A great run from Elliot K resulted in another Guildfordians penalty on the 22 which was scored by Cameron H who was finding his kicking boots in the absence of injured captain George V. Like England at Allianz (Twickenham) the day before, Guildfordians trailed by 1 point with 7 minutes to go.
However, unlike the French, Chobham camped themselves in the Guildfordians 22 and despite a great defensive effort from the home team, Chobham went over for a well worked try under the posts that was duly converted by their very consistent fly half and the game ended 13-21 to the visitors.
The result of the game between Old Ruts & Haslemere will determine who Guildfordians will play in the Quarter Finals on 2nd March, a must win away fixture for the Under 15s.
